    Where were you at 8 last night?

    I was talking with Jenifer at a coffee shop.

    ** 과겆진행 (was/were -ing)는 과거의 특정 시점에서 끝나지 않고, 진행 중이었던 동작, 상태를 묘사. 

    비교: I talked with Jennifer last night and she says she's sorry.


    I hurt my back when I was playing soccer last night. 

    hurt- 짧게, was/were playing- 먼저, 길게, 상대적인 길이감   


    A. How did you break your arm?

    B. I slipped on the ice while I was crossing the street in front of the dorm.

          *미끄러지다.                                                                                    *dormitory

    A. Why weren't you at the meeting?

    B. I was waiting for an overseas call from my family.   



    과거의 특정한 시점에 하고 있었거나, 진행 중이었던 일에 대해 말할 때 과거 진행 시제 was/were+ ing를 쓴다. ~하고 있었다. ~하고 있는 중이었다. 

    • At 6 o'clock yesterday, I was doing my homework. :계속 진행하고 있었던 것을 표현
    • A: Did I wake you up?
      B: No, I wasn't sleeping.  자고 있지 않았어

    • A: Why did you change the channel? 
      B: Oh, were you watching that program?

    • A: Diane was looking for you a while ago. 
      B: I know. I already talked to her.

    • A: Were you waiting for me a long time before I arrived? 
      B: No, I just got here. 

    • A: Harry and Jared weren't playing tennis at 8 o'clock this morning. They were having breakfast. 


    과거진행 시제는 과거 특정 시험을 나타내는 when과 자주 함께 쓴다. 
    • The phone was ringing when I walked in the door. 집에 들어 섰을 때, 전화기가 울리고 있었다. 
    • We were setting the table when the guests arrived for dinner.  손님들이 도착했을 때, 식택을 차기는 중이었다. 
    • "Why didn't you bring an umbrella? When I left home this morning, it wasn't raining. 
    • When Helen and Phil got to the theater, the movie was already playing.

    • What were you doing at 6:30?
    • I was cooking dinner.
